Outside Work
I enjoy the thrill of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate, and the camaraderie of football. I share my passion for the mountains with friends and colleagues through the Trail Walking Club, which I founded with Tim Cooper (RIP) in 1997.
Between 2021 and April 2025, I completed a 10,000-mile walking challenge for Mountain Rescue charities in the UK, raising £40,000.
Teams supported in the first 10,000 miles:
2,000 miles (18 Sept 2021): End point: Scafell Pike for Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team
4,000 miles (24 Sept 2022): End point: Hellvelyn for Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team
5,000 miles (15 Apr 2023): End point: Cairngorm for Skye Mountain Rescue Team
6,000 miles (7 Oct 2023): End Point : Snowdon for Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team
8,000 miles (21 Sept 2024): End Point: Scafell for Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team
10,000 miles (12 Apr 2025): End Point: Ben Nevis for Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team
I am now embarking on a second 10,000-mile challenge (2025–2029), supporting more of the UK’s incredible rescue teams:
10,000–12,000 miles: Glossop MRT (TBD)
12,000–14,000 miles: Cockermouth MRT (Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike)
14,000–15,000 miles: Pennine & Bowland MRT (Clougha Pike)
15,000–16,000 miles: East Cornwall MRT (Coastal Walk or Brown Willy)
16,000–18,000 miles: Brecon MRT (Pen Y Fan / The Fan Dance)
18,000–20,000 miles: Cairngorm MRT (Ben MacDui – 2nd highest mountain in the UK)
The incredible volunteers of Mountain Rescue teams provide lifesaving search and rescue cover across the UK, including the areas where the National Three Peaks Challenge takes place. This challenge spans the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales—Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon—attracting thousands of participants who take on the challenge to raise money for charities like Macmillan Cancer Research and Age UK.
Inspired by their efforts, I wanted to give back to the heroes who make these challenges safer. While many climb the Three Peaks to support great causes, I have committed to walking 20,000 miles to support those who risk their lives to rescue others in need. Every step I take is to raise vital funds for the Mountain Rescue teams—because they are the ones who ensure that others can walk, climb, and explore safely.
